Met Office issues weather warning

02nd February 2012

Landlords may want to ensure that they have adequate financial protection in place to deal with the effects of property damage caused by freezing temperatures.

Burst and broken pipes could be a major cause of concern for homeowners, but those who have blocks of flats in their property portfolio may find that the problems multiply. In many high-rise buildings, floods caused by burst pipes at the top of the property can ruin flats on lower stories as gravity takes its course on the freezing waters.

Block insurance will provide some level of financial protection for landlords, as it covers any expenditure associated with flood repair costs, meaning that flats can be made habitable quicker and periods of income-cutting under occupancy are reduced to a minimum.

And there is no time like the present for the introduction of a robust insurance policy.

The Met Office has issued a weather warning for many parts of the UK.

Cold air has rolled in from the east and now some areas of the British Isles are experiencing temperatures of around minus ten degrees C with the threat of snow to come.

Paul Gunderson, chief forecaster at the Met Office, said that a new front was coming in to meet this cold air from the Atlantic and all sorts of precipitation was possible.

"It's a finely balanced situation, so there is some uncertainty about which areas will see the most significant snowfall, but at the moment the risk is highest in central and eastern areas where we could see up to 5-10cm of snow," he stated.

At the start of winter, the National Landlords Association warned property owners about the dangers of icy temperatures and prolonged snowfall.

"Each winter, many rented properties are damaged by burst pipes," said David Salusbury, the chairman of the group.
